What makes a good portfolio shoot?

I know I've been chatting about portfolios a LOT the last few weeks, so let's discuss what actually makes a good portfolio.

There isn't actually a “right or wrong” when it comes to your portfolio, which is why it can be so difficult to know if you're on the right track. But there are two things that you can ask yourself:

  1. Does the work in your portfolio feel like it represents you as an artist?

  2. Does the work in your portfolio attract the kinds of clients that you'd like to work with?

You can decide that you want to be a photographer that shoots exclusively on medium format film in natural light studios. Or you could decide that you want to be a photographer that works in the commercial industry for streetwear brands.

Whoever you want to be as an artist is absolutely fine. You just need to create work with your dream clients in mind, and then go out and find those clients, and share that work with them. I guarantee you that there are clients out there who will want what you do, you just need to go out there and find them.

If you're wanting to learn more about creating the perfect portfolio which will get you hired by your dream clients, the waitlist to my new online course “Perfect Portfolio” is open! The waitlist will get early access to join the course on July 13th 2022. There are only 30 spaces on the course, so if you know you want to take part, I'd highly recommend getting on that waitlist!
