Tackling Money Blocks: A Guide for Fashion Photographers
As artists and photographers, we often focus on our craft, but it’s just as important to think about money. Over the next few weeks, we’ll explore all things money, from mindset to practical financial tips like charging for your work and negotiation strategies. This week, I want to dive into an essential topic for shifting your financial reality: money blocks.
What Are Money Blocks?
Money blocks are mental roadblocks that prevent you from attracting, managing, or keeping money in a positive way. These blocks aren’t about lacking math skills—they stem from subconscious beliefs that influence how we interact with money daily. I didn’t realize how much these beliefs affected me until I began improving my relationship with money.
How Money Blocks Hold Us Back
Money blocks can make it difficult to ask for what you deserve, keep money, or even believe you can be financially successful. Often, we unknowingly self-sabotage because of limiting beliefs about money. These blocks can hold us back from achieving success, even as creatives.
Where Do Money Blocks Come From?
We’re all born with a neutral stance on money, but as we grow, we’re influenced by our family, friends, culture, and media. Over time, these experiences shape our beliefs, which can either be positive or negative. The key is identifying the beliefs that are holding you back.
Common Negative Money Beliefs
Some common negative beliefs about money that I’ve noticed in the creative community include:
"You have to work hard to make money."
"Artists don’t make money."
"Money is the root of all evil."
"I wish I didn’t have to deal with money."
The more you think these thoughts, the more you believe them. That’s how money blocks are formed, and these beliefs can prevent you from reaching your full financial potential.
Identifying and Shifting Your Money Beliefs
The first step is to become aware of your money blocks. Write down what you believe about money and really question if those beliefs are true. For example, is it true that “rich people are bad”? Of course not! There are plenty of wealthy people who are kind and generous. Once you identify a negative belief, reframe it into a positive affirmation. For instance, instead of thinking, “Artists don’t make money,” reframe it to “Artists can make a great living doing what they love.”
Reframing Your Money Mindset
Changing your money mindset takes time, but consistent effort will make a huge difference. One powerful tool is using affirmations. I’ve been journaling with positive money affirmations every day, and it has completely transformed my mindset. Revisit your beliefs regularly, and talk to others about money to gain new perspectives.
How This Impacts Your Career
When you shift your money mindset, you’ll see significant changes in your career. Believing in your worth makes it easier to ask for your desired rates, and you’ll start attracting work that aligns with your true value. This isn’t just wishful thinking—it’s a psychological necessity for your success as a photographer.
Final Thoughts
Take the time to identify your money blocks, challenge them, and reframe them into positive beliefs. Use tools like affirmations to reinforce new beliefs, and revisit them regularly. Changing your financial mindset will not only boost your career but also improve your overall life.
