The One Thing That Changed My Career As A Fashion Photographer

Up until 6 years ago, I'd only ever worked with really small fashion brands. We're talking the jewellery designer who crafts at home as a side hustle. Or the wedding dress shop that wants a few extra posts for Instagram.

I loved working with them, and I'm so grateful because they got my career started.

But that wasn't my dream. I dreamt of shooting for big name brands, travelling, being on big sets, and working with the best teams.

I remember how hopeless I was, and how much I looked at other photographers around me feeling confused, jealous and like I'd never make it in the way that they had.

One afternoon, on a total whim, I sent out one email to a brand that I loved with no real expectations, and everything changed.

In that email I attached a moodboard, and asked them if they would be interested in sending me a box of clothing for me to use in a shoot. In exchange, they would receive the images to use on their social posts.

They replied and said yes!

It was in that moment that something clicked. I realised that I was FULLY in control of my life, and that if I wanted to make my dreams come true, it was up to no one but me.

Pitching to brands has single handedly been the biggest game changer in my career countless times.

I pitched to Joules, and they became a client.

I pitched to Crew Clothing, and they became a client.

I pitched to Boden, and they became a client.

I pitched to Molby The Label, and they became a client.

I pitched to L'Officiel Singapore, and they became a client.

I pitched to Grazia UK, and they became a client.

I pitched to ELLE Croatia, and they became a client.

I pitched to Harpers BAZAAR Malaysia, and they became a client.

Honestly, the list goes on and on. The dream clients just keep piling up.

I'm not sharing this to boast or brag. I'm sharing to show you what is possible if you simply put your heart into something, get super clear on what it is that you want, and go for it.

You may know that I have an online course called “Pitching With Confidence” that I've been teaching since 2019. Over 300 students have taken that course now, and seen huge changes in their careers! PWC is the most in-depth course specifically written for photographers about pitching that I know of. The processes that I teach inside the course are exactly what I use for my own career - I don't keep any secrets! So, if you've ever thought about joining the course, this would be a great time to do so!
