Today I’m going to share with you the easiest lighting set up that absolutely any fashion photographer can do. It’s so easy, it almost feels silly writing a blog post about it… but then again, I think it’s worth mentioning.
So often, photographers feel pressure to “look professional.” To some, that might mean having 5 lights up, a massive studio set, loads of kit. To others, it will look like something else. For a long time, I’ve felt like I need to “look the part” by using a tun of equipment.
But let me share with you my favourite light set up of them all.
Window light!
These images are some of my favourites I’ve ever done. They’re timeless, simple, and very beautiful (if I do say so myself) - and they were taken with nothing but a window, in a tiny little apartment.
No other equipment necessary!
This is honestly my go to set up. If I’m shooting beauty, and I have the option to use a window, I’ll go for it.
Don’t get me wrong, you can achieve beautiful things with flash, and there is a time and place for it (ie, if you need to get the entire subject in high detail, you’d want to use a low aperture like f8 or more, that often requires flash). However, for simple portraits like these, a window is my go to.
As far as the set up goes, it’s very straight forward:
Grab a backdrop - even a white sheet will do. I actually used my lighting stands, clipped the white backdrop to it, and that was it.
Place the backdrop directly in front of a window. It doesn’t need to be a massive one - even a small window will work wonders for portraits.
Place your model in front of the window, and shoot.
That’s it!
You’ll be amazed by how beautiful the results can be :)
