How To Create A Vision Board

Ever heard of a vision board before? They were something which had been on my radar for a few years, but it wasn't until last week that I finally sat down and made my own. Before you roll your eyes and say "Oh my goodness, Olivia has turned into a massive hippie," bare with me. Vision boards aren't that hippie at all!

What is a vision board?

A vision board can be pretty much whatever you want it to be, but for me, it's a large collage of images that you put together in one place, on display, that depicts the "vision of your ideal life." Some people make them on Pinterest boards, some people simply have a big wall in their home where they stick pictures up. I chose to use a large A2 piece of card, and stick my images down on that.

It's become a huge poster in my office that I can now look up at whilst I'm sitting at my desk, and it inspires me!

Why Should You Create A Vision Board?

I'm going to approach this from more of a business point of view, than a "law of attraction" point of view (which is the context within which vision boards come up most of the time). If you're into law of attraction (which I am) and you'd like to talk about vision boards in that context, feel free to send me a DM on Instagram, and let's chat!

As a business owner, you have a direction you want to go in. You've got goals, and ideas of what your perfect life would look like. I'm sure you've spent time thinking about what your goals are, but if you haven't a vision board can be an incredible tool for putting your goals into a more visual form!

As human's we love images. Images help our brains to create clearer pictures in our minds. So much of what we do involves our sight! Yes, you could spend time writing out your ideal life/business (and this is an exercise I do encourage you to do - read about that in this post), and imagining it in your head... but how powerful would it be to be able to LOOK at that ideal life/business every day?

Every time you look at your vision board, you're being subconsciously reminded of your goals. You're being shown a picture of where you want to go. It's an incredibly powerful tool, especially when times are feeling a bit more tough. We all have days in business and life where we're feeling down, like things aren't going our way, or that we've lost sight of our end goal. A vision board can act as a reminder of why we're doing what we're doing.

How To Create A Vision Board

Ok, so I've got you hooked on the idea of creating a vision board! What now?

1. Write down your ideal life/business. Dream big, don't hold back at all. If you could do ANYTHING with your life and business, what would it be? Write it down, and spend some time with it, even a few days if you want to.

2. Select the areas of your dream, and break it down into categories. These might include things like:

Perfect home

Interiors

Travel

Career

Work Space

Type of Work you want to create

Relationships

Style

Pets

Family

Whatever feels important to you, jot it down.

One of my important categories was "work space." I have a deep desire to one day have a garden studio, with large windows, where I can work, fill the room up with inspiration, and almost blend myself in with nature.

3. Find visual representations of your categories. You can find these visuals anywhere! Pinterest, magazines, postcards, flyers... whatever inspires you and LOOKS like part of the vision you have for your ideal life/business, keep it. Print it out. Save it!

Using myself as an example, I headed to Pinterest and found visual representations of the kind of "garden studio" I'd one day like to have. I printed them out, and they are now on my vision board, reminding me daily of what I'd one day like to have.

4.Create your board. I created mine on a large piece of white card, and printed all of my visuals from Pinterest. I sat down at my dining table, and put them into their various categories, and slowly stuck them onto the card.

5.Display your vision board in a place you'll see it often. I have placed mine right above my desk. I sit here for many hours in the week, and having my board here means that whenever I look away from my desk, my vision board catches my eye. I'm really drawn to it, so I look at it often! Everything on there is something I adore, and would personally love to have in my life.

6.Update your board as you see fit. Some of you may prefer not to stick your images down with glue, but rather use something like blue tack, so that you can easily adapt your boards. I personally have left a little bit of blank space on mine so that I can add images here and there. If I get a new idea for something I'd like to have in my life, I'll add it! If something no longer speaks to me, I'll cover it up with a piece of white paper.

So there you have it; how to create a vision board. This is such a wonderful exercise, and something I recommend that everyone should do... business owner or not! Feel free to leave ideas in the comment section on what you'd do for your own vision board. And if you create one, and you fancy sharing it with me, send me a photo of it on Instagram! I'd love to see it.
