How I Overcame the Fear of Terrifying Large Shoots in Fashion Photography

Have you ever found yourself holding back from creating work? Maybe playing it safe, sticking to what feels comfortable, and avoiding pushing the boundaries because of fear? If so, you're not alone.

Let me share a personal story with you. I used to be absolutely terrified of large groups of people, especially on photo shoots. This fear stemmed from a history of serious bullying, which left me with a fear of being in groups and a tendency to people-please.

In my early 20s, I avoided shoots with large crews at all costs. I preferred to work with just a model and maybe a makeup artist, keeping things as low key as possible. But as I grew older and gained more experience, I realised that I couldn't continue to evolve as a photographer if I stayed within my comfort zone.

I took small steps to overcome my fear. Slowly, I started working with larger teams, allowing for more input and collaboration. With each shoot, I grew more confident and comfortable taking charge of a set.

However, the real turning point came when I realised the power of planning. I discovered that thorough preparation was the key to feeling confident and in control on set. Gone were the days of showing up unprepared; instead, I meticulously planned every aspect of my shoots, from shot lists to lighting setups to moodboards and posing guides.

Today, I regularly direct shoots with 15-20 people, and it's all thanks to the rigorous planning process I developed through my Perfect Portfolio method. By learning how to plan effectively, you can lead large teams with ease and confidence, turning your creative vision into reality.
